Simply put, a lithium-ion battery (commonly referred to as a Li-ion battery or LIB) is a type of rechargeable battery that is commonly used for portable electronics and electric vehicles. The popularity of this kind of battery is also steadily growing for military and aerospace applications. 

In a lithium-ion battery, lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge, and back when charging. Moreover, lithium-ion batteries are simply more efficient than lead-acid batteries, which means that more solar power can be stored and used in lithium-ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries are only 80%–85%  efficient, depending on the model and condition. This means that if there are 1,000 watts of solar coming into the batteries, there are only 800-–850 watts available after the charging and discharging process. Meanwhile, lithium-ion batteries are more than 95% efficient. In other words, using the same example, there will be over 950 watts of power available with lithium-ion batteries. 

And in addition to better storage for solar power, higher efficiency also comes with a faster rate of charge for lithium-ion batteries. They can handle a higher amperage from the charger, which means that they can be refilled much faster than lead-acid batteries.
