Solar Market Outlook in Senegal

A partnership between the World Bank, IFC, the European Investment Bank and Proparco has worked together to finance two solar PV plants in Senegal. This solar project is projected to provide clean and sustainable power from solar sources for more than half a million Senegalese residents.

The two solar plants mentioned above were launched in May of 2021 with a total solar capacity of 60 MWac. The plants will generate energy with a tariff making it one of the cheapest electrical costs in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa. But apart from the access to affordable and sustainable energy, it’s the ability to reduce carbon emissions by 89,000 annually that will be the biggest benefit of installing these new plants.

The two projects are a result of the auctions that were tendered by the Senegalese government through the Energy Regulatory Commission. Despite the growth in the number of residents in the country that now has access to power, there is still a significant amount of them that lacks access to electricity. But things are looking up with the affordability of solar power especially since the previous source – fuel imports – was too costly for the economy to sustain.

Solar Energy Equipment Supply Capacity in Senegal

The availability of local suppliers of solar power in Senegal is rather limited. However, there are plenty of local and online suppliers of solar power equipment to small- and large-scale installations.

Top 8 Major Seaports & Logistics in Senegal

Senegal benefits from its exceptional location that facilitates efficient and easy logistics and trade activity. It has many functioning ports used for commercial activity such as Dakar, Thies, and Ziguinchor.

What is a Microinverter?

A Microinverter or a Solar micro-inverter is an extremely small device used to convert DC to AC. These inverters are so small that they are used as plug-and-play. Microinverters work remotely with every panel. This is advantageous in case of panel failure or power surge.

These inverters work on every power output from the panels and if there are inconsistencies rectification can be done without hindering the performance of all the other panels.

Where are Microinverters used?

Microinverters find their application in Solar Roofs for domestic use. These microinverters monitor the performance of every panel and convert DC to AC. A micro inverter is best used with small Solar roofs with limited spaces.

Microinverters help the Solar system to overcome difficulties like shading, dust, sunlight blocking, and many more difficulties.

Advantages of Microinverter

The biggest advantage of the Solar Microinverter is the compact size. For high power output, bulky inverters are required, but to convert a very small level of DC from panels requires small compact Microinverters.

  • Microinverters are connected to the arrays and panels to get the maximum performance from the system.
  • Maintenance is easy simple replacement and connection of plug and play devices.
  • Can be used with apps and network
  • Each panel output can be monitored throughout the day
  • The performance of the adjacent panels is not affected due to the malfunction of one panel.

How does a Microinverter work?

Microinverters are manufactured to operate in the range 190 and 220 W. Micro Inverter converter DC to AC at the panel level.  Microinverters are preferred over string inverters and can have a warranty of up 15 to 25 years.

What are some major brands of Microinverter?

Emphasis is the leading brand of Solar Micro Inverters. Some of the other big brand names are:

  • SolarBridge Technologies/SunPower
  • Advanced Energy Industries
  • Petra Systems
  • Chilicon Power
