Solar Market Outlook in Macao

The energy consumption of Macao is tremendously high and this is expected to continue its upward trend given the increasing number of large buildings. The lack of proper policies in building energy efficiency is contributing to the ineffective implementation of measures to improve building energy efficiency. 

While Macao is not among the leaders in Asia when it comes to solar power generation, the private sector has stepped up to provide an alternative source. In Macao, a company known as Melco, has collaborated with local SMEs in the development of the largest solar power plant in Macao. The project installed more than 18,000 solar PV panels spanning a total of nearly 30,000 square meters of rooftop space. This project is capable of producing up to 7.7 million kWh of energy on an annual basis (or equivalent to the energy consumption of 1,500 residents in a year).

Other private institutions have followed suit and constructed their own renewable energy systems, especially focusing on solar and wind sources. The government of Macao is also looking to amend its existing policies to provide incentives to those who are willing to invest in solar energy.

What is a Power Transformer for a Solar Plant?

Power Transformers are devices used for transferring power from one line to another. Transformers use electromagnetic induction to induce the current from the primary coil to the secondary coil. Irrespective of the source of electricity, transformers are either step up or step down.

 

How is a Power Transformer used with a Solar Plant?

In a Solar Plant, the transformers get used in two points in the whole circuit. At the transmission, level to step up or step down the power. And in the solar inverters to step down the voltage to change the DC to AC.

 

Types of Power Transformer for Solar Plant

There are two types of Solar Power transformers.

  • Step up Power Transformer: The DC from the solar panels gets a step up from the transformer to match the power rating for domestic use.
  • Solar Inverter Transformer: The second application is the solar inverter. When the current is generated in the solar panels, it is a direct current or DC. To make it usable for households, solar inverters convert this DC to AC.

 

How does a Power Transformer for a Solar Plant work?

A transformer has a metallic core with coils on two sides. In Solar Transformers, the number of primary windings is more than the secondary windings. 

Due to electromagnetic induction, the current from the primary coil gets transferred to the secondary coil. The current gets stepped up due to the secondary windings.
