Established in 1969, Zomeworks Corporation stands as a pioneering force in the realm of Passive Solar Energy solutions. At its inception, the company set its sights on crafting innovative living spaces known as Zomes—distinctive dome-shaped zonohedra structures that found homes in New Mexico, Colorado, California, and beyond. Beyond architectural marvels, Zomeworks extended its influence to diverse projects, including Zome playground climbers and even a Gibbon Flight Cage for the Albuquerque zoo. A significant breakthrough came in the form of the 31-Zone Structural System, a space frame technology for which Zomeworks secured a patent. This revolutionary system, eventually known as the Zometoy, evolved into a modeling kit comprising specialized plastic ball joints and variously sized sticks. In a fascinating turn, scientists at the National Institute of Standards discovered a similar structural system in nature—Quasicrystals, shedding light on the mathematical intricacies described in the Zome Primer. Navigating through the energy-conscious '70s, Zomeworks diversified its portfolio with a range of architectural sun control products. Skylid® insulated self-operating louvers, Beadwall™ moveable insulation, and Sunbender® reflector shades emerged, alongside passive solar water heaters like Big Fin™ absorbers and Bread Box batch water heaters. Despite the flux in public interest following the oil crisis, these innovations have stood the test of time, with many installations still operational today. The '80s witnessed the integration of photovoltaics into terrestrial applications, with Zomeworks quick to embrace the shift. The Track Rack™ passive solar tracker, a standout product, gained popularity globally for optimizing the performance of photovoltaic panels. As the solar industry expanded in the '90s, Zomeworks addressed emerging needs with the development of Cool Cell®, a temperature-regulating enclosure that found unexpected success in the Telecommunications industry. Amidst the dot-com bubble and the fall of Enron, Zomeworks weathered challenges, with Cool Cell sales rebounding as utilities and telecommunications companies recognized their reliability. Concurrently, President Steve Baer spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives in the '90s, culminating in the development of a self-sustaining method to heat and cool buildings without external power. Years of experimentation led to the construction of the Double Play Dave Houses in 2007, showcasing Swiss-made absorbers for winter heating and the innovative Snap Cap™ metal collector roof for summer cooling. Today, Zomeworks Corporation remains at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions, blending decades of expertise with a commitment to innovation and resilience in the ever-evolving landscape of solar technology.
