Sipatech currently offers the only truly operational process for the high-efficiency transformation (~ 40%) of cellulosic biomass (including waste) into bio-ethanol. Following the most recent discoveries made in biotechnology, it has been possible for some years to transform straw and other residues of agricultural origin into "green gold" , that is, ethanol of cellulosic origin. Although chemically identical to that derived from the fermentation of grains or soybeans, cellulosic ethanol has a net energy content 3 times higher than that obtained from grains, and emits a lower level of greenhouse gases. The most recent technological developments have shown that the trend is that of a continuous increase in production yields and a decrease in production costs. To date, in the face of genetically modified enzymatic methods, it is possible to produce ethanol with costs at source comparable to those of petrol of fossil origin.
