Founded at the age of 29, after a stint as an engineer in Osaka, I envisioned ELM not just as a career move but as a catalyst for economic growth in my hometown. The concern that my acquired skills might languish in a non-urban setting fueled the inception of a company that would not only define my professional journey but also create job opportunities for engineers and dreamers alike. Collaborating with my brother, a corporate adviser and co-founder, we christened our venture "ELM." Beyond being a mere acronym, EL symbolizes electronics, while M encapsulates the essence of "measurement," "mechanism," "machinery," and the Japanese term "mu," translating to "dream." The dreams were audacious yet compelling: to provide local engineers with challenging opportunities, to retain control by eschewing subcontracting, and, above all, to take the dreams nurtured in Kagoshima to the global stage. In the early days, our dreams faced skepticism, deemed naive for a manufacturing company in a non-urban setting. Yet, our limitations spurred innovation. ELM's location, distant from collaborative opportunities, drove us to cultivate in-house expertise covering the spectrum of electronic machinery and equipment development—a rarity for a company of our scale. While urban counterparts thrived on niche specialization, we diversified across fields like agriculture, environment, energy, and space. This not only enriched our portfolio but also endowed us with resilience in a dynamically evolving business landscape. Marketing posed a significant challenge in our local milieu, prompting a global outreach strategy. Specializing in development, ELM strategically leveraged sales partners in Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and the EU, propelling us into a global trajectory. Reflecting on the state of the Japanese manufacturing industry, we recognized a vulnerability rooted in complacency. ELM, in stark contrast, thrives on challenges. When confronted with skepticism and declarations of impossibility, our response echoes our ethos: "There is always a chance." It is a mantra that propels us forward, refusing to succumb to stagnation. ELM is a haven for those who relish challenges, adore the art of manufacturing, and defy boundaries.
