The liquid electrolyte is a solution of chemicals that allow the battery to interact with the electrodes and generate electricity. Lithium-ion batteries were invented by Dr. Edward C. Seidl, Herbert A. Simon, and Calvin S. Broad in the early 1970s. However, the first commercial lithium-ion battery came out in 1991.
