Lithium Ferro Phosphate Battery

What is this type of battery?

LFP is an abbreviation for Lithium Iron Phosphate which is the material that the cathode of LFP or LiFePo4 batteries is made. LFPs are one of the main types of lithium-ion batteries that rank one of the highest lithium batteries market share in today’s worldwide market. Which entered the market in 1996 becoming one of the lighter alternatives to lead acid batteries at the time. Creating a huge opportunity for portable devices to store a good amount of energy in a more compact size & less weight.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this type?

Advantages

  • 1-Low-price: LFPs are the cheapest lithium-ion battery to date making it preferable for manufacturers to produce reaching around $90/Kwh.
  • 2-charging cycles: LFPs can achieve more than 3000 charging cycles without affecting the capacity of the battery, for example, if you charge the battery daily giving more than 8 years of battery life with the same original capacity.
  • 3-Safety: LFPs don’t explode or catchy fire due to their strong rigid structure making them the safest lithium-ion battery option for several applications that require high safety.

Disadvantages

  • 1-Energy density: LFPs have one of the lowest energy densities in lithium-ion battery types achieving around 160Wh/Kg while other types can reach around 300Wh/Kg which is almost the double
  • 2-Temperature tolerance: LFP batteries at low temperatures of 0℃ or less their performance drops dramatically forcing some applications to add heaters to maintain the performance level while limiting its use in other types of applications totally.

What are the use cases of LFP batteries?

The number of advantages LFPs have made them suitable for several applications which brings us to the following:
  • 1-Electric Vehicles: as safety & price are crucial for all EV makers LFPs made a great replacement for NMC batteries especially when Tesla in Q3 2021 announced the replacement of its NMC battery chemistry with LFP battery chemistry.
  • 2-Home storage: Households with solar systems on their rooftops for decades suffering from changing their traditional lithium batteries every 3 to 5 years made a huge impact on off-grid systems. But LFPs came with an easy +10 years lifetime & a cheaper option than other types.
  • 3-Utility storage: Grid blackouts or instability due to natural disasters or sudden interruptions of power plants can cause a lot of financial damage. Therefore, having backup power to withstand this sudden instability is a necessity for a lot of power grids worldwide. LFPs with their high safety are very suitable for harsh outdoor conditions plus having the ability to last longer decreasing the cost of maintenance needed.
