Utah Schools Getting Solar
OpenEI
Utah is comprised of 41 school districts, and thanks to $3 million inAmerican Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, at least 1 school withineach 41 districts will receive a solar-power system on campus. The moveis aimed at educating students, faculty, and parents of kids attendingthe school.
The schools will install the solarpower systems, but most important will be the projects aimed at engaging students with the solar power system. Projects will include trackingthe solar energy data at the solar power system and comparing it withother solar power systems at other schools. The National EnergyFoundation will train around 200 teachers on renewable energy so that it can be integrated into the curriculum. The aim is to incorporaterenewable energy into math, science, social studies, and even languagearts classes. Utah’s program is the first of its kind, but DOE advisorGilbert Spirling believes more will follow, saying "they’re going tolook at this and say, ‘You know, this is what we ought to be doing.’"
The Open Energy Information initiative (OpenEI) is a platform toconnect the world’s energy data. It is a linked open data platformbringing together energy information to provide improved analyses, unique visualizations, and real-time access to data. OpenEI followsguidelines set by the White House’s Open Government Initiative , whichis focused on transparency, collaboration, and participation. OpenEIstrives to provide open access to this energy information, which willspur creativity and drive innovation in the energy sector.Articles l Homepage
