 In 2009, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in the UnitedStates saw their largest absolute and percentage decline (405 millionmetric tons or 7.0 percent) since 1949, when records began to becollected annually.  While emissions have declined in three out of thelast four years, 2009 was exceptional.  Emissions developments in 2009reflect a combination of factors, including the economic downturn.
