Honolulu-based Natural Power Concepts has designed a mobile, retractable-blade wind turbine that generatesboth wind and solar energy. Featuring seven instead of three blades, the wind turbine catches low-wind speeds more effectively. The energygenerated by the system is stored in a battery bank.
The turbine is considered safer than utility-scale turbines as whenwind speed exceeds certain levels, the blades are pushed back to aclosed position. The company has also secured licensing agreement withOshkosh Defense, which will develop a full-scale model in the comingmonths.
