Nissan Helps in The Greening of Detroit
Japanese automaker Nissan is lending a corporate hand to the city of Detroit.
This past weekend, the company donated a Nissan Titan truck to the city’s annual tree planting event. ‘The Greening of Detroit’ organizes this yearly event, which works to create a greener city through planting and educational programs.
“We rely heavily on trucks to move equipment, supplies and materials throughout the City of Detroit in our efforts to promote urban agriculture practices and activities,” said Rebecca Salminen Witt, president, Greening of Detroit. “The donated Titan will significantly help us with our initiatives citywide, and all of us here are very appreciative of Nissan’s support.”
The donated Nissan Titan will be used to support the organization’s tree planting initiatives. These programs have reportedly delivered more than 70,000 new trees to Detroit parks, schoolyards, and neighborhood streets since 1989.
“For the future of our planet and generations to come, Nissan is committed to the environment, from reducing the company’s environmental impact to providing customers with innovative products that contribute to the development of a sustainable mobile society,” said Carla Bailo, senior vice president, research and development, Nissan Americas. “Through the donation of this Nissan Titan, we are pleased to help The Greening of Detroit improve the quality of life in a community where our employees live and work.”
The Greening of Detroit is a not-for-profit organization. For 20 years, its goal has been to create neighborhood green spaces in Detroit neighborhoods. The agency’s work began in 1989, when a group of business and community leaders founded The Greening of Detroit. Their task was initially focused on tree planting projects. But the group’s role has expanded quickly to meet the growing needs of the community, including extensive education programming and open space planning.
