A team of MIT researchers, who addressed this issue, has emerged up with an unforeseen power-efficiency mechanism for LEDs, more than 100 percent! This range is called ‘unity efficiency.’
Put it briefly, the MIT researchers have managed to produce 69 picowatts of light consuming mere 30 picowatts of power. Well, output of the LEDs goes 230 percent better than the input applied. To bring this into reality, the researchers made an interesting calculation. When the energy is halved, the input power will get reduced by a factor of four, whereas the emitted light energy rises linearly with voltage so that it’s also only halved.
As a result, efficiency of LED goes up as its input energy decreases. This is the way the researchers under Parthiban Santhanam could realize huge efficiency for LEDs. Amazingly, this physical mechanism works will all LEDs. The researchers utilized small amounts of surplus heat from LEDs to give off more output than the energy used as input.
