Evergreen To Auction Off Solar Equipment (ESLR)

Want some used solar energy factory equipment? Evergreen Solar might have what you need. The Marlboro, Mass.-based based public company is set to auction offsome equipment starting on Oct. 7. The sale, through online auctionsite GoIndustry DoveBid, is scheduled to end on Oct. 10 (see list of equipment for sale).
It’s unclear where the equipment is coming from, but MichaelMcCarthy, Evergreen’s director of investor relations said he’d checkand let me know. The equipment could come from the pilot line it closed last December to shift production to a commercial plant to Devens, Mass.
The company, whose core competence lies in producing ultra-thinsilicon wafers, has made a huge change in its business model this year.Instead of making its own solar cells from the wafers and assemblingthe cells into panels, Evergreen signed a deal with Jiawei SolarChina China to produce cells and carry out panel production in China.
Evergreen and Jiawei started constructing 100-megawatt factories for the wafers, cells and panels in July this year. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2010, Evergreen said.
When Evergreen announced its plan with Jiawei, it said it would continue to produce cells and panels from its Devens facility.
Outsourcing production could become more common in the solarindustry as manufacturers seek ways to cut expenses. BP Solar, which shut down some of its production lines in the United States earlier this year, is pursuing the same strategy.
