The Elleray Preparatory School in the UK has unveiled a unique set of treehouse classrooms that are designed by Robert Gaukroger of Kita Design Company. Constructed in the form of self-sufficient pods, the classrooms are fashioned from recycled materials and generate renewable energy for lighting.
The three pods that make up the Treehouse School stand on silts connected by a central platform made from recycled plastic milk bottles and wood shavings. The units are constructed from ribbed timber frame set upon Douglas fir stilts and then clad in English chestnut shingles.
The BREEAM “Excellent”-rated project focuses on recycled and low-impact architecture and design. While the heating and cooling systems run on a ground-source heat pump, rainwater is also harvested to reduce potable water use. Moreover, each pod is equipped with a set of solar panels that provide the necessary energy for illumination.
