The biggest basketball of them all stands some 93 million miles away from the Golden State Warriors office and practice facility.
But with the sun, distance means nothing (and everything – we’re exactly where we have to be!). So the Bay Area’s contribution to the NBA is bringing that powerful solar energy right down to the basketball court. The Warriors, through Castro Valley solar installer, Solar Co., have installed enough solar panels to provide up to 80 percent of the team’s daily electricity consumption.
The Warriors’ move marks yet another professional sports club seeking a greener way to operate. Among others, MLB’s San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox both use solar power at their stadiums. Golden State’s move individually represents the team’s goal of becoming a more sustainable business. “We were looking at ways in which we could be more conscious about how we do business,” said team President Robert Rowell.
