New Missouri Solar Rebates Cut Installation Costs in Half

Residents of Missouri have a new option in rebates for installing residential solar power systems. Federal incentives that will cover 30 percent of total system costs are available to anyone, anywhere and anytime until 2016. Until recently, the state of Missouri had done very little to promote solar power outside of a state-funded energy loan program. However, in 2008, the state established a renewable portfolio standard demanding that 11 percent of Missouri’s energy come from renewables by 2020. On top of that was a law, which went into effect on January 1, requiring all investor-owned utilities to offer a solar rebate of at least $2.00 per watt installed.

Enter Cathy and Ray Baisch, one of the first households in Missouri to take advantage of the new rebates. The couple combined several federal tax credits with a $7,200 local rebate from Kansas City Power & Light to subsidize half of their new four-kilowatt system. The grid-tied solar array, made up of SunPower solar panels, will provide up to 90 percent of their energy needs.
