A Three-Dimensional Solar Cell?
Solar Industry
Solar3D Inc., the developer of a three-dimensional solar celltechnology, has filed a patent application for its solar cell design and methods of fabrication.
Inspired by light-management techniquesused in fiber optic devices, the company’s solar cell technologyutilizes a three-dimensional design to trap sunlight insidemicro-photovoltaic structures, where photons bounce around until theyare converted into electrons, Solar3D explains. The company’s management believes that this breakthrough solar cell will be dramatically moreefficient, resulting in a lower cost per watt.
