The Electrification Coalition (EC) has just released an analysis forthe case for adopting electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-inelectric-hybrid vehicles for more than 16 million American corporate,commercial, and government fleets.

The Fleet Electrification Roadmap builds a case for business andpoints out that in terms of the bottom line, electric vehicles andplug-in hybrids offer lower operating costs. The report includes adetailed examination of commercial and government fleets, and points out the common practices that could make them important early adopters ofGEVs.

The EC recognizes the varied financial and technological obstaclesfor fleet operators in transforming a gas-fueled fleet of vehicles toelectric…

The report is intended to provide policymakers and business leaderswith a framework for overcoming the technological and financialchallenges associated with electric vehicles in order to spursignificant change in our country’s dependence on oil.

The Fleet Electrification Roadmap offers targeted public policies,including tax credits and subsidies, to aid in combating theseobstacles:

  • Tax credits for light-duty PHEVs and EVs deployed in fleets and for medium and heavy-duty PHEVs and EVs;
  • Clean renewable energy bonds for infrastructure;
  • Allow immediate expensing of GEV purchases and supporting infrastructure for operators of certain fleets;
  • Guarantee of residual value for the first generation of lithium-ion batteries; and
  • Federal fleet electrification, including the Postal Service.*

The latest EC report also presents the results of a detailed totalcost of ownership analysis for PHEVs and EVs in fleets for severalindustries…

The analysis suggests that with certain policies in place, fleetsintegration of electric and plug-in hybrids could result in a total of200,000 vehicles on the road in just five years’ time.

The Fleet Electrification Roadmap follows up a 2009 report thatprojected 75% of the light-duty vehicle miles driven across the countryshould be by electric vehicles.

The Electrification Coalition Roadmap was released last year, andproposed a transformation of light-duty vehicle fleets in the UnitedStates into one in which grid-enabled vehicles (GEVs) are the newconventional standard.

“Electrification of our transport sector is, of course, not just amajor step forward in our effort to decarbonize American society; itmeans much more in terms of the enhancement of national security and the preservation of national wealth,” David Crane, president and CEO of NRG Energy Inc. said in a speech to the U.S. Senate Committee onEnvironment and Public works lasplugin 200,000 EVs and PHEVs on U.S. Roadways by 2015t October.

Seeking to achieve their goals through public policy research,education, and the public, the Electrification Coalition was started in2009 as a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization.

The group is comprised of business leaders committed to promotingpolicies and actions that facilitate the deployment of electric vehicles on a mass scale in order to combat the economic, environmental, andnational security dangers caused by United States’ dependence on fossilfuels.
